Prayer Shawl Team
An increasingly popular ministry in many United Churches is that of the Prayer Shawl Ministry. It is one tangible way of providing pastoral care to those who are going through difficult times, whether for reasons of health or other life circumstances. Volunteers knit shawls in whatever pattern or materials they wish. Most of the work is done at home but there are occasional gatherings to keep up with what is happening. The shawls are delivered as gifts to individuals whom the group believes would benefit. The recipient knows that many prayers have gone into the creation of the shawl and that more prayers accompany the gift in an ongoing way.
People receiving a shawl are typically very touched and find the shawl to be a tangible reminder of the prayers that others offer to them. In the words of one grateful recipient:
I want to thank you very much for the prayer shawl I received. I feel very blessed to have it and all the prayers that have been given for me. I have my ups and downs, but I try to take each day as it comes and live it and enjoy it to the fullest. I leave my life in God’s hands.
There is plenty of wool available for knitters to work with and new members are always welcome. Please contact the office at 250.832.3860 for current contact information or to request a prayer shawl.
